That Came Out WrongTeen Slang Edition

30 words your teenagers use, and how never to say them in front of their friends.

This time, the foreigner is you.

  • “Feel my aura, boys! I’m sending you all my aura!”
  • “Jake! Love the new haircut. You look so chopped!”
  • “Hello, my little Delulu! Tell the girls about your singer!”

Every week your kids bring home a new word. You hear it at dinner, in the car, on the touchline. One day you try it yourself, and the whole room goes silent.

Same format and same dark humour as the rest of the series: the scene, the line that came out wrong, what the word really means, how teens use it, and the verdict. Can parents say it? Usually not.

Minus a Thousand Aura

A dad in front of a football goal opens his arms with his eyes closed; two boys stare at him.

Saturday morning, under-14s football. All week, Mark has heard his son talk about “aura”. He assumes it’s the energy thing from his yoga class. So before kick-off, he walks to the touchline in his cycling shorts, closes his eyes and opens his arms to the team.

The line

“Feel my aura, boys! I’m sending you all my aura!”

What he meantI’m sending you good energy for the match.
What they heardAura is your cool factor. A dad in cycling shorts “sending” his: minus a thousand, for him and for his son.

Heard in

USA & UK+1000 aura. He scored without even looking.
FranceSame word. A show-off is “aura farming”.
SpainSame word. Running joke: the opposite of aura is “Laura”.
ItalySame word. You lose aura points when you trip in public.
Can parents say it?Only about yourself, after a disaster. “I just lost a thousand aura” after dropping the lasagne: accepted. Sending your aura to the team: minus ten thousand. Forever.
